The People Behind Onda Azul
Two people, one island and the belief that surfing can inspire anyone

Hemerson - Rooted in the Ocean
Hemerson grew up on Maio, where the ocean has always been part of his daily life. Over the years, he worked as a turtle protector and surf instructor on several Cape Verde islands — experiences that shaped his deep respect for nature and his passion for teaching.
With Onda Azul, he wants to build something for his homeisland Maio and to share this connection with others: with local youth, who find confidence and purpose in the waves, and with island visitors, who discover Maio’s beauty through authentic, uncrowded surf moments.

Julia - A Heart for People and Nature
Julia comes from a background in education and community work, with a love for the outdoors. A yoga teacher with a heart for Africa, she discovered on Maio how surfing can bring joy and grounding not only to local kids but also to travelers seeking meaningful moments away from crowded beaches. For her, learning happens everywhere — in the water, in movement, and in shared experiences.

Togehter - The Vision Behind Onda Azul
Together, Hemerson and Julia built Onda Azul as a place where everyone is welcome — from young locals riding their first waves to travelers seeking authentic experiences on a quiet Atlantic island.
Onda Azul celebrates a vibrant mix of local African culture and European influences, creating a space where all cultures are embraced and valued. Their vision is simple: use surfing to bring people together, create opportunities, and foster a deeper connection to Maio’s nature and community.
Every lesson supports not only individual growth but also the long-term development of a surf culture that is inclusive, open, and rooted in respect for everyone who loves the ocean.
